Yamunotri is a revered pilgrimage site nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, India. It marks the origin of the sacred Yamuna River, revered as a goddess in Hindu mythology. The centerpiece of the site is the ancient Yamunotri Temple, dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, where devotees offer prayers and seek blessings.
Altitude: The Yamunotri Temple is located at an elevation of about 3,293 meters (10,804 feet) above sea level.
Surroundings: It is set amidst the breathtaking Garhwal Himalayas. The temple is close to the source of the Yamuna River, which is about 1.5 kilometers away.
Architecture: The temple features a simple yet beautiful structure, typical of Himalayan temples. It is built in a traditional Garhwali architectural style, with a stone base and a wooden roof.
Main Shrine: The main shrine houses an idol of Goddess Yamuna. The deity is often depicted in a graceful form, adorned with flowers and offerings from devotees.
Trek: The temple is accessible only by trekking. The trek from Janki Chatti or Hanuman Chatti is approximately 5-6 kilometers and can be challenging due to the steep ascent. Pilgrims often choose to undertake the trek as part of the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit.
Accommodation: Basic lodging options are available in and around Yamunotri, including guesthouses and lodges. It’s advisable to plan and book accommodations in advance, especially during peak pilgrimage season.
